This CD contains:

ELLIOTT, E.B.

Horae Apocalypticae; or, A Commen= tary on=20 the Apocalypse, Critical and Historical; Including Also An Examination of = the=20 Chief Prophecies of Daniel. Illustrated by an Apocalyptic Chart, and Engra= vings=20 from Medals and Other Extant Monuments of Antiquity. With Appendices:=20 Containing, Besides Other matters, A Sketch of the History of Apocalyptic= =20 Interpretation, Critical Reviews of the Chief Apocalyptic Counter-Schemes,= and=20 Indices. (4 volumes, 1862)

All the major Reformers and all the major Reformation creeds and confes= sions=20 adopted the historicist position =96 and it is this position that Elliott = so=20 skillfully defends. Included in Horae Apocalypticae you will al= so=20 find a very useful historical survey of who held which positions concernin= g=20 eschatology, much history on the Roman empire (and its interaction with=20 Christianity), how the Reformation, Islam, etc., were prophesied in the= =20 Apocalypse, a world chronology according to the Hebrew Scriptures (whi= ch=20 would make the Earth 6127 years old), patristic views of prophecy, the bea= st and=20 his mark (666) revealed, and much more. The Papacy is also shown to be = the=20 apocalyptic antichrist, which was a standard position among the Reformers.= =20 Elliott also deals with Moses Stuart's Preterism.

Concerning Elliott's Horae Apocalypticae H. Gratton Guinness, wr= ites,=20 "The 'Horae Apocalypticae' of Elliott, which may well be considered as = the=20 most important and valuable commentary of the Apocalypse which has ever be= en=20 written, was also called into existence by Futurist attacks on the=20 Protestant interpretation of prophecy (and the same would apply in our day= , but=20 even more so, as the classic Protestant system of interpretation for the b= ook of=20 Revelation is still being undermined by the Jesuit inspired Futurist syste= m, but=20 also, increasingly [even in so-called "Reformed" circles] by the other Jes= uit=20 inspired system: Preterism!--RB)."

"His Horae Apocalypticae (Hours with the Apocalypse) [literally = 'time=20 with the Apocalypse'] is doubtless the most elaborate work ever produced o= n the=20 Apocalypse... Begun in 1837, its 2500 pages of often involved and over= loaded=20 text are buttressed by some 10,000 invaluable references to ancient and mo= dern=20 works bearing on the topics under discussion.... Perhaps its most uniqu= e=20 feature is the concluding sketch of the rise and spread of the Jesuit coun= ter=20 systems of interpretation that had made such inroads upon Protestantism"=20 (http://www.historicist.com/horae.htm).

"When he (Spurgeon--ed.) reaches the book of Revelation his clea= r=20 recommendation is E.B. Elliott=92s Horae Apocalypticae. He succinctly stat= es that=20 it was "the standard work". It would surprise most Baptists today t= o=20 realize that this most eminent Baptist preacher was himself an Historicist= or=20 Continuist as he called it then. Elliott=92s work was the standard work in= 1878=20 because the Historicist interpretation was still the standard in Protestan= tism=20 and this work had gone through 4 editions and had established itself as th= e=20 standard within the Historicist school"=20 (http://www.historicist.com).

M'LEOD, ALEXANDER

Lectures Upon the Principal Prophecies of the Revelation=20 (1814)

David Steele writes, "I can again cordially recommend to his attention = the=20 Lectures of Doctor M'Leod, as the best exposition of those parts of= the=20 Apocalypse of which he treats, that has come under my notice."

EDWARDS, JONATHAN

The History of Redemption

"[A] massive theological treatise in the form of history," notes= =20 Christian History magazine (Vol. 4, No. 4, p. 6). Furthermore, rega= rding=20 Edwards' work on this book, CH states, "To prepare himself for t= he=20 task, he read every historical work he could lay his hands on. He planned = to=20 trace the workings of God from Creation to his own day." Edwards chron= icles=20 God's mercy and faithfulness to His Church and the destruction of His enem= ies.=20 Written from the older postmillennial perspective, useful insights abound.= 359=20 pages.

BROWN, DAVID

Christ's Second Coming: Will It Be Premillennial? (1882, 1990)

<= /FONT>

One of the most devastating books ever written against premillennialism= ,=20 written by a former premillennialist. The New Schaff-Herzog Religio= us=20 Encyclopedia observed, this work is widely regarded "a classic."

BROWN, DAVID

The Restoration of the Jews (1861, 1990)

The bulk of the book consists of David Brown's classic work focusing on= =20 Romans 11, The Restoration of the Jews (1861). This is the same= David=20 Brown that had a hand in the Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary= and=20 whose "most enduring work... Christ's Second Coming: Will It Be=20 Premillennial? ...remains the classic evangelical polemic against=20 premillennialism" (Dictionary of Scottish Church History and=20 Theology, p. 97). In short, this book demonstrates that Scripture t= eaches=20 (and the best Reformation theologians concur) that the future will be most= =20 glorious for the Jews -- when they, as a people, are drawn by God's irresi= stible=20 grace to the Lord Jesus Christ.

BROWN, DAVID

The Apocalypse: Its Structure and Primary Predictions (1891)

Nearly 50 years after he penned one of the most devastating refutations= of=20 premillennialism ever seen (Christ's Second Coming: Will It Be=20 Premillennial?), this ex-premil (after repeated solicitations to d= o so)=20 penned this book. It deals specifically with the book of Revelation from a= =20 historicist, postmillennial position.

STACY, JAMES

Hand-book of Prophecy, Containing a Brief Outline of the Prophecies of = Daniel=20 and John, Together with a Critical Essay on the Second Advent

<= /FONT>

A historicist work, by a Presbyterian, written in the early twentieth=20 century, which proposes to give "a brief outline of the prophecies of J= ohn,=20 as set forth in the book of Revelation, and as usually held by leading=20 interpreters." Includes helpful charts, tables and diagrams and compar= es=20 some of the major differences between systems of eschatology.

MEDE, JOSEPH

The Apostasy of the Latter Times: In which, (according to divine predic= tion)=20 the world should wonder after the Beast, the Mystery of Iniquity should so= far=20 prevail over the Mystery of Godliness, whorish Babylon over the virgin-Chu= rch of=20 Christ; as that the visible glory of the True Church should be much cloude= d, the=20 True unstained Christian Faith corrupted, the purity of true worship pollu= ted.=20 Or, The Gentiles Theology of Demons, i.e. inferior divine powers: Supposed= to be=20 mediators between God and man: Revived in the Latter times amongst Christi= ans,=20 in worshipping of Angels, deifying and invocating of Saints, adoring and=20 templing of Relics, bowing down to Images, worshipping of Crosses, etc. Al= l=20 which, together with a true discovery of the Nature, Origin, Progress, of = the=20 great, fatal, and solemn Apostasy, are cleared. Delivered in public some y= ears=20 since upon I Tim. 4:1,2,3. (1641, 1845 edition)

Birks, in his introduction writes, "for close and varied research, happ= ily=20 applied to illustrate an important warning of Scripture, few works can cla= im=20 equal praise. No treatise, perhaps, has had a more powerful and lasting ef= fect=20 in unmasking the Christian idolatries of former ages, and thus forming a s= trong=20 bulwark against the proud pretensions of the Roman Antichrist" (p. i). Sol= ves=20 the "666" mystery! We have also added Twisse's preface from the 1641 editi= on.=20 343 pages.

BARNES, ALBERT

Notes, Explanatory and Practical, on the Book of Revelation (1872)=20

Having gone into the writing of this commentary with no preconceived no= tions,=20 Barnes notes how he was surprised "to find how nearly (his) views coincide= with=20 those taken by the great body of Protestant interpreters." He further note= s that=20 "perhaps this fact may be regarded as furnishing some evidence that, after= all=20 the obscurity attending it, there is a natural and obvious interpretation = of=20 which the book is susceptible." The Protestant confessions also attest = to=20 this fact, having all taken the historicist view of the book of Revelation= .=20 506 pages.

SYMINGTON, WILLIAM

Messiah the Prince or, the Mediatorial Dominion of Jesus Christ=20 (1884)

This is the standard work on the kingdom of God in English! There i= s=20 nothing else like it; it is one-of-a kind! It covers the necessity, realit= y, and=20 qualifications of Christ's dominion over not only the church, but all nati= ons=20 too. Anything less is to rob Christ of His magnificent, majestic, mediator= ial=20 glory -- for He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. "While books o= n the=20 priestly work of the Redeemer, and especially on the Atonement, are numero= us,"=20 notes the introduction to the American edition, "no formal and exhaustive= =20 discussion of the kingly office of the Messiah... and its application to v= arious=20 classes of moral agents is elsewhere to be found... It is cause for satisf= action=20 that the only treatise, as yet, upon this subject, is a work of signal abi= lity,=20 lucid in arrangement, reverent in spirit, and with hardly an exception, so= und=20 and judicious in its conclusion. Its very merits are probably, in part,= the=20 reason why no other work on the same subject has appeared, and until it is= =20 supplanted by a better work -- an event not likely soon to occur -- it wil= l have=20 a value peculiar to itself." In short, this is a unique book devote= d to=20 the absolute Kingship and dominion of the Lord Jesus Christ -- over all he= aven=20 and earth!

GUINNESS, H. GRATTAN
Romanism and the Reformation from the Standpoint = of=20 Prophecy (1891)

As the author states,

We have suffered prophetic anti-papal truth to be too much forgotten. T= his=20 generation is dangerously latitudinarian -- indifferent to truth and error= on=20 points which Scripture is tremendously decided and absolutely clear. These= =20 lectures, simple and popular as they are, will, it is hoped, open many min= ds to=20 perceive that the Bible gives no uncertain sound as to Romanism, and that = those=20 who will be guided by its teachings must shun an apostasy against which th= e=20 sorest judgements are denounced.

244 pages.

GUINNESS, H. GRATTON

History Unveiling Prophecy or Time as an Interpreter (1905)

This book should be useful to those interested in eschatology, history = and=20 hermeneutics. Guinness takes us from "Pre-Constantine, or Martyr Churc= h=20 Stage" to "The Present Stage." Chapters on the Reformation, Puritanism in = the=20 seventeenth century and the French Revolution look especially interesting,= in=20 connection with the prophetic word. Guinness also deals with "The Modern D= enial=20 of the Historic and Protestant Interpretation of the Apocalypse," "Coming = Events=20 in Jewish History," "The Practical Use of the Apocalypse," and much more.= =20 Three diagrams are included, one on church history as outlined in the=20 Apocalypse. 515 pages, indexed.

WYLIE, SAMUEL B.

The Two Sons of Oil; or, the Faithful Witness for Magistracy and Minist= ry=20 upon a Scriptural Basis (1850, third=20 edition)

A Covenanter classic opening Revelation 11:3-4 and Zechariah 4:14. It=20 has been hailed as the "best presentation of the position of the Covena= nter=20 Church that has been written." Noting that the "[t]ime has been, when = the=20 whole body of Presbyterians, in Scotland, England, and Ireland, unanimousl= y=20 subscribed" to these principles, "[f]or civil and ecclesiastical reformati= on"=20 and that thousands bled and died for the glorious covenanted cause of civi= l and=20 ecclesiastical reformation

FAIRBAIRN, PATRICK

Prophecy Viewed in Respect to Its Distinctive Nature, Its Special Funct= ion,=20 and Proper Interpretation (1865)

A 532-page manual of interpretation focusing on prophecy. Full of=20 applications, it makes for interesting reading. Fairbairn elevates prophet= ic=20 discussion by helping us to "look into the very nature of God, to behol= d in=20 his light the laws of eternity, according to which he governs the church a= nd the=20 world," which is "something infinitely higher than a mere knowledge= of=20 the future" (Hengstenberg). The sections on the Papacy and Antic= hrist=20 are some of the best writing on this topic. This book is light yea= rs=20 ahead of the modern mush and drivel that is peddled by the prophetic specu= lators=20 of our day!

DURHAM, JAMES

A Complete Commentary Upon the Book of Revelation (1658, 1799 edition, 2= =20 volumes)

"After all that has been written it would not be easy to find a more= =20 sensible and instructive work than this old-fashioned exposition... the my= stery=20 of the Gospel fills it with sweet savour" writes Spurgeon of th= is=20 work (cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 318,= =20 emphasis added).

STEELE, DAVID

Notes on the Apocalypse (1870)

Brooks says, "I have derived more knowledge of the Apocalypse from t= his=20 work than from all other expositions which I have consulted."

STEELE, DAVID

The Two Witnesses: Their Cause, Number, Character, Furniture and Specia= l=20 Work (1859)

This is a great companion volume to Steele's Notes on the=20 Apocalypse (above). Here Steele zeros in on and works primarily fr= om the=20 text of Revelation 11:13, "I will give power unto my two witnesses, and th= ey=20 shall prophecy." Steele deals with testimony-bearing, Antichrist, Popery, = the=20 beasts of Revelation, the mark of the beast, 666, the image of the beast, = civil=20 and ecclesiastical apostasy, Reformation, covenanting, heresy, schism, ter= ms of=20 communion, slavery, sectarianism, Mormonism, Independency, freemasonry, hi= story,=20 worship, idolatry, Britain, the United States, Canada, mystical Babylon, t= he=20 last days, the ultimate victory of the church and a host of other=20 subjects!

CALVIN, JOHN

The Rise of the Papacy with Proof from Daniel and Paul that the Pope is= =20 Antichrist

This is Book 4, Chapter 7 out of the Beveridge edition of Calvin's=20 Institutes. It shows how "the Papacy appeared complete in all its p= arts,=20 the seat of Antichrist." Rome's impiety, execrable tyranny, and wicked= ness=20 is also clearly portrayed, in a most pointed manner, by the pen of the gre= at=20 Reformer.

GOODWIN, THOMAS

An Exposition of the (Book of) Revelation

An eminent high Calvinist Independent divine who sat at the Westminster= =20 Assembly, Goodwin here gives a detailed look at the book of Revelation<= /B>.=20 Also appended are his "Brief History of the Kingdom of Christ, Extracte= d Out=20 of the Book of Revelation" and "A Discourse of Christ's Reward; or,= the=20 Glory Which He Receives in Heaven (Rev. 5:12)."

Understanding the Reformation position on eschatology, as it is set for= th in=20 this work, gives us great insight into why the Romanists (i.e. the Jesuits= in=20 particular) were so intent on planting both Preterism (Alcasar, c. 1615) a= nd=20 Futurism (Ribera, c. 1585) among the Protestants. 583 pages.

ELLIOTT, E.B. (Alexander M'Leod, David Steele, George Faber, Thomas=20 Newton)

Islam in Revelation: An Historic Look at Protestant Eschatological Thou= ght on=20 the Rise and Fall of Islam

There are two great antichristian religious systems of deceit revealed = in the=20 book of Revelation. The "great western antichrist" of Roman Catholicis= m=20 (Rev. 17 and 18) and the "great eastern antichrist" of Islam (Rev. 9). Thi= s has=20 been the majority position of historic Protestant interpretation (Historic= ism)=20 for centuries (as all the most faithful Reformers and all the Reformation = creeds=20 and confessions attest). For example, the illustrious John Calvin proclaim= ed=20 that "Mahomet" and "the Pope" are "the two horns of=20 Antichrist."

The following six extracts on Islam's place in prophecy are taken from = five=20 Historicist books which Still Waters Revival Books has published over the = past=20 years (see the URLs noted below for the full printed editions of each titl= e).=20 These extracts not only clearly show that the rise and fall of Islam i= s=20 prophesied in Scripture, but they also give us one of the most powerful=20 testimonies to God's sovereignty (over all His creatures and all their act= ions)=20 in all of the Word of God. In fact, when the historicist position is caref= ully=20 studied, the prophetic fulfillment in the case of Islam and Revelation cha= pter=20 nine is seen to be so striking and well attested that "even advocates o= f=20 other approaches who are adamant in their rejection of the historicist sys= tem of=20 interpretation have admitted the convincing nature of this particular=20 identification" (Steve Gregg, commenting on Rev. 9:1-6 in=20 Revelation: Four Views, p. 176).

The following six excerpts on Islam in Revelation comprise 105 p= rinted=20 pages and are taken from:

The First Principles of Apocalyptical Interpretation (1848)

FLEMING, ROBERT

The Rise and Fall of the Papacy=20 (1848)

Explains that historicism deals with the great whore that rides the bea= st of=20 Revelation as the symbolic representations referring to "the ecclesiastica= l=20 government of the Papacy, or the apostate church of Rome," and the Roman E= mpire=20 respectively. Holds to and defends a late date for the writing of the book= of=20 Revelation (which was the generally accepted position, concerning the dati= ng of=20 the book of Revelation, of early church for about the first three centurie= s=20 after Christ). "A reprint," wrote The Patriot, "of one of the mo= st=20 remarkable and sagacious works extant on the subject of unfulfilled=20 prophecy, deserving a perusal as a succinct, learned, and eminently de= vout=20 exposition of the Apocalypse."

As also many rare Histories of the Works and= =20 Servants of God in the Church of Christ. Part 2. The Faithfulness of God=20 considered and cleared, in the great Event of his Word. Part 3. To Which is added an Index, Alphabetically digeste= d, of=20 all the principal Matters contained in the Three Parts; and at the Beginni= ng of=20 the Work a Table of Scot's Phrases, which often occur in reading Mr. Flemi= ng's,=20 Mr. Rutherford's, Mr. Durham's, and other Scot's Author's Works. (1726, 5t= h ed.=20 corrected)

POND, ENOCH

The Seals Opened; Or, The Apocalypse Explained (1871)

After noting that he found the Jesuit (i.e. Preterist=96RB) method of=20 eschatalogical interpretation unsatisfactory, Pond tells us how he came to= =20 settle on the historic Protestant method of interpretation (i.e. historici= sm).=20 Furthermore, he states that, "avoiding the theories of Rationalists and Ro= man=20 Catholics on the one hand, and of the Adventists (Premillennialists=96RB) = on the=20 other, the plan of interpretation which we have pursued is the same which = has=20 been held by the great body of evangelical ministers and Christians in Ame= rica=20 and in England for the last hundred years."

BROWN, JOHN (of Haddington)

A Harmony of Scripture Prophecies and History of Their Fulfillment=20 (1784)

Contains a harmony and history of the Scripture prophecies concerning: = Adam,=20 Noah, and their families; the Canaanites; Egyptians; Philistines; Ethiopia= ns;=20 Edomites and Amalekites; Moabites and Amonites; Syrians; Assyrians; Chalde= ans;=20 Medes and Persians; Greeks; Romans; Ishmaelites, etc.; Scythians, Tartars,= =20 Turks; the Lord Jesus Christ; the Romish Antichrist; Israelites, Je= ws;=20 and the New Testament Church. The final pages give a brief chronology of n= oted=20 events from the creation (about 6000 years ago according to Brown) to the= =20 author's day. This book, Brown notes, taken together with his Sacred=20 Topology; or A Brief View of the Figures and Explication of the Metaphors= =20 Contained in Scripture, "form a kind of systematic explication of t= he=20 whole Old and New Testament."

BROWN, JOHN (of Haddington)

A Brief View of the Figures; and Explication of the Metaphors, Containe= d in=20 Scripture (1812)

Macfarlane called Brown "perhaps the most remarkable divine that our= =20 country has produced" (cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish= =20 Covenant, p. 485). In this book, which is divided into three sections,= Brown=20 gives a "general view of the figures of Scripture language," an "explicati= on of=20 metaphors respecting persons" and an "explication of metaphors respecting= =20 things." He also notes that "the ensuing work contains a whole system o= f=20 divine truth, represented in Scripture-metaphors." 480 pages.

NEWTON, ISAAC

Observations Upon the Prophecies of Daniel (1831)

NEWTON, THOMAS

Dissertations on the Prophecies Which Have Remarkably Been Fulfilled, a= nd at=20 this Time are Fulfilling in the World (2 volumes, 1817)

The author defends the historicist position of eschatology. Historicism= =20 teaches that a number of the prophecies of Scripture, and especially those= in=20 the book of Revelation, will be seen to be fulfilled throughout history. T= he=20 specific prophetic fulfillments in question (for example what does the "be= ast"=20 or "the mother of harlots" in Revelation 17 refer to?) are not seen to be = past=20 (as in the Preterist system) or future (as in the Futurist system); neithe= r are=20 they spiritualized to refer to general ideas (of good versus evil) without= =20 specific historic fulfillment (as in the Typico-Spiritual system). The=20 historicist position was ensconced in all the substantial Reformed confess= ions=20 (including the preamble to the Decrees of Dort [1618-19] and the Westminst= er=20 Confession of Faith [1647]); and no major Reformed Confession has ever tak= en the=20 Preterist or Futurist position (which is not surprising, since both of the= se=20 positions, as systems, originated with the Jesuits). Historicism was the=20 position held by almost all the Reformers including Luther, Calvin and Kno= x.=20 This book also covers the whole book of Revelation. Twelfth edition, index= ed,=20 439 (vol. 1) and 440 pages (vol. 2).

Notes on the Apocalypse=20 (1870)

In 1779, in their Testimony and Warning Against the=20 Blasphemies and Idolatry of Popery, the Reformed Presbytery called=20 Durham=92s Complete Commentary... On the Book of Revelation [$39.98= , 2 vol.=20 rare bound photocopy], "the best = exposition=20 of that book that has yet been published" (p. 61= n). Had=20 they had the privilege of reading Steele=92s Notes on the Apocalypse we are=20 quite certain that they would have given it a similar endorsement. Though= =20 written in a different style than Durham=92s work, Steele=92s notes on Rev= elation=20 may be even more valuable in many respects =97 Steele having taken a more = decided=20 position "in the wilderness." Ste= ele also=20 had the benefit of many more resources, having written over two centuries= =20 later. Steele=92s aim in writing this book is ma= de clear=20 in his own words taken from the preface,

As this work is intended for the instruction and edifica= tion of=20 the unlearned, rather than for the entertainment of the learned, words of= =20 foreign extract are used as seldom as possible. Practical remarks and=20 reflections are rarely introduced; the=20 principal aim being simply to ascertain and present to the reader the mind= of=20 the Holy Spirit. How far this object has been=20 accomplished, is of course left to the judgment of the honest inquirer. Th= e=20 reader, however, in forming his judgment of the value of these Notes, may = be=20 reminded of that inspired rule in searching the Scriptures,=97"Comparing s= piritual=20 things with spiritual." To assist him in the application of this divine ru= le,=20 many chapters and verses are quoted from other parts of the Bible, but=20 especially within the Apocalypse itself; that by concentrating the various= rays=20 upon particular texts or symbols, their intrinsic light may be rendered mo= re=20 luminous. Thus the interpretation given, if correct, may be confirmed and= =20 illustrated.

Appendices include a section on, The New Jerusalem, The Antichrist, The Image of the Beast, The Be= ast=92s=20 "deadly wound," The Little Book, The Death of the Witnesses, The Mark of t= he=20 Beast, The First Resurrection, The Identity of the Two Witnesses, Sounding= of=20 the Seventh Trumpet and The Title of this Book (i.e. the Book of=20 Revelation=97RB). This work also includes variou= s=20 "animadversions on the interpretations (of Revelation=97RB) of several amo= ng the=20 most learned and approved expositors of Britain and America."

Comments on this work include the four given below, all = which=20 were given without the solicitation or knowledge of the author. The=20 Evangelical Repository notes, "the=20 author adduces a greater number of Scriptural illustrations than any other= =20 writer on prophecy we ever met with." Hutcheson = writes,=20 "I can recommend it to any person= as=20 condensing the best thoughts to be had on the subject."=20 Brooks says, "I have derived more= knowledge=20 of the Apocalypse from this work than from all other expositions which I h= ave=20 consulted." And finally, John Cunningham comment= s,=20 "It is neither a dictionary nor=20 concordance; neither a confession of faith, nor an encyclopedia, but a the= saurus=20 of Theology, embodying the characters of all these."=20 Steele dedicated this work to John Cunningham, author of The Ordinance = of=20 Covenanting ($14.99 P, $29.00 HP). 323 pages.

"After all that ha= s been=20 written it would not be easy to find a more sensible and instructive work = than=20 this old-fashioned exposition... the mystery of the Gospel fills it with s= weet=20 savour" writes Spurgeon of this work (cited in Johnston, <= I>Treasury=20 of the Scottish Covenant, p. 318, emphasis added). Carstairs, in the introduct= ion to this=20 huge set, comments that the judicious reader "will count the author an interpreter, one among a thousand= ." This book touches on many subjects "with some practical=20 observations, and several digressions, necessary for vindicating, clearing= , and=20 confirming many weighty and important truths." Furthermore, along w= ith a=20 detailed verse by verse interpretation of the book of Revelation it includ= es (at=20 the end of volume two) a brief summary (containing 24 pages) of the whole= =20 book. Resource 3. ELLIOT= T,=20 E.B.

Horae Apocalypticae; or, A Commentary on the Apocalypse,= =20 Critical and Historical; Including Also An Examination of the Chief Prophe= cies=20 of Daniel (1862)

The title continues: "Illustrated by an Apocalyptic Chart, and Engravin= gs=20 from Medals and Other Extant Monuments of Antiquity. With Appendices:=20 Containing, Besides Other matters, A Sketch of the History of Apocalyptic= =20 Interpretation, Critical Reviews of the Chief Apocalyptic Counter-Schemes,= and=20 Indices." This four volume set is respected by many as a scholarly work on= =20 eschatology. It will be especially valuable in our day as it absolutely= =20 destroys the Jesuit inspired preterist system by conclusively proving a la= te=20 date for the writing of the book of Revelation. Elliott also demonstrates the impossibility of the futurist syste= m,=20 which, like preterism, was also concocted (as a system) by the Jesuits to= =20 counteract the classic Reformation eschatology called historicism.=20 That this is no small issue is clear, as Kevin R= eed=20 exhibits (in his book review titled "The Ecclesiology of John Foxe: A book= =20 review by Kevin Reed of John Foxe and the Elizabethan Church by V.= =20 Norskov Olsen [Berkeley: University of California Press, 1973]") by citing= Olsen=20 when he writes,

The Counter Reformation is generally considered to have three aspects: = the=20 Jesuits, the Inquisition, and the Council of Trent. In view of the signifi= cance=20 of the Protestant apocalyptic interpretation of history which propheticall= y=20 pinpointed step by step the events covering the whole Christian era from t= he=20 beginning to the end, it seems justifiable to suggest a fourth aspect, nam= ely=20 the praeteristic and futuristic interpretations launched by Catholic expos= itors=20 as a counterattack (p. 47).

All the major Reformers and all the major Reformation creeds and confes= sions=20 adopted the historicist position =97 and it is this position that Elliott = so=20 skillfully defends. Included in Horae=20 Apocalypticae you will also find a very useful historical survey of wh= o held=20 which positions concerning eschatology, much history on the Roman empire (= and=20 its interaction with Christianity), how the=20 Reformation, Islam, etc. were prophesied in the Apocalypse, a world chronology according to the Hebrew Scriptures (which wo= uld make=20 the Earth 6127 years old), patristic views of prophecy, the beast and his = mark=20 (666) revealed, and much more. Th= e Papacy=20 is also shown to be the apocalyptic antichrist, which was a standard posit= ion=20 among the Reformers. Elliott also deals with Mos= es=20 Stuart's Preterism.

Sadly, one major warning needs to= be given=20 about this book. However valuable the contents are a= s a=20 defense of historicism (and the late date of the book of Revelation), the = author=20 adopted the premillennial heresy and thus marred an otherwise useful work = when=20 he promotes these views. 2611 pages, with a 29 page index.

Micah 4:1-5 (#9 & #10) Reformation Eschatology, the= =20 Millennium and the Victory of Christ's Kingdom (2 sermons, 1998)

The eschatology of the Reformers (and the Reformation Creeds and Confes= sions)=20 defended and explained: exhibiting t= he=20 prominent place that the victory of Christ's kingdom (in history) is given= in=20 Scripture -- and in the writings of the best Reformers (from Calvin and Ca= meron,=20 to Witsius [Dutch] and the Westminster Divines [British]). Also demonstrates how the millennium (which Price notes may begi= n within=20 a generation or two) will include such notable events as the nations bowin= g to=20 Christ's Kingship civilly, worldwide unity (based on truth, Amos 3:3) in t= he=20 church, and universal peace in the world. This is hard to dispute just in = light=20 of the text from which these sermons are preached:

But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the ho= use of=20 the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be= =20 exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.=20 And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mounta= in of=20 the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of hi= s=20 ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, a= nd the=20 word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among many people, and= =20 rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into=20 plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a= sword=20 against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. But they shall sit = every=20 man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid= : for=20 the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it. For all people will walk ev= ery=20 one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our G= od for=20 ever and ever (Micah 4:1-5).

Lectures Upon the Principal Prophecies of the Revelation= =20 (1814)

M'Leod, a Reformed Presbyterian, here defends (in 480 pages) classic historicist Reformation eschatolog= y from=20 the book of Revelation. David Steele, in his= =20 Notes on the Apocalypse commends this work numerous times. Steele=20 writes,

the best works to be obtained as helps to understand the prophetic part= s of=20 scripture, will be found in the labors of those who, from age to age, have= =20 obeyed the gracious call of Christ =97 who have 'come out from mystic Baby= lon,'=20 from the Romish communion, from the mother and her harlot daughters, and w= ho=20 have associated more or less intimately with the witnesses. Among these ma= y be=20 consulted with profit the works of Durham, Mason and M'Leod (p. 312)... The late Rev. Alexander M'Leod, D.D., who had the wo= rks of=20 learned predecessors before him, has successfully corrected many of their= =20 misinterpretations in his valuable publication, entitled Lectures upon = the=20 Principal Prophecies of the Revelation. At the time when he wrote that= work,=20 he possessed several advantages in aid of his own expositions. He had acce= ss to=20 the most valuable works which had been issued before that date (1814). He = was=20 then in the vigor of youthful manhood; and he was also comparatively free = from=20 the trammels which in attempts to expound the Apocalypse, have cramped the= =20 energies of many a well disciplined mind, political partialities. At the t= ime of=20 these profound studies, he occupied a position 'in the wilderness,' from w= hich=20 as a stand point, like John in Patmos, he could most advantageously survey= the=20 passing scenes of providence with the ardor of youthful emotion, and with= =20 unsullied affection for his divine master... expressing my obligations to the Doctor's labors, to whose system= of=20 interpretation as well as to most of his details, I cheerfully give my=20 approbation in preference to all other expositors whose works it has been = in my=20 power to consult (pp. 317-19)... Doctor M'Leod a= nd Mr.=20 Faber (see next item--RB) I consider among the best expositors of the prop= hecies=20 on which they severally wrote... On material points they have shed much li= ght=20 where those who preceded them left the reader in darkness, or involved him= in=20 perplexing labyrinths. Faber preceded M'Leod, and the latter availed himse= lf of=20 all the aid furnished by the former; yet till the 'mystery of God shall be= =20 finished,' his people will be receiving accessions of light from the 'sure= word=20 of prophecy' (p. 321)... I can ag= ain=20 cordially recommend to his attention the Lectures of Doctor M'Leod, as the= best=20 exposition of those parts of the Apocalypse of which he treats, that has c= ome=20 under my notice' (p. 324).

But Steele is not shy about pointing out that,

the principal defect pervading the Lectures, and one which most readers= will=20 be disposed to view in an opposite light, appears to be, a charity too bro= ad, a=20 catholicity too expansive, to be easily reconciled with a consistent posit= ion=20 among the mystic witnesses. Their author, however, deriving much informati= on=20 from the learned labors of English prelates on prophecy, could not 'find i= n his=20 heart' to exclude them from a place in the honorable roll of the witnesses= . I am=20 unable to recognize any of those who are in organic fellowship with the 'e= ldest=20 daughter of Popery,' as entitled to rank among those who are symbolized as= =20 'clothed in sackcloth.' The two positions and fellowships appear to be obv= iously=20 incompatible and palpably irreconcilable. It is true that there have been = and=20 still are in the English establishment divines who are strictly evangelica= l; but=20 the reigning Mediator views and treats individuals, as he views and treats= the=20 moral person with which individuals freely choose to associate; and we oug= ht to=20 'have the mind of Christ' (I Cor. 2:16, p. 322-23, bold emphases added=20 throughout).

Notwithstanding a few shortcomings, this is probably the best book avai= lable=20 (at present) on the book of Revelation.

(2 volumes, 1811)

Defends classic historicist postmillennialism and its position relative= to=20 the 1260 year period mentioned in Scripture.

In the author's words,

(t)reats of a subject peculiarly interesting to every serious Protestan= t: for=20 the famous period of 1260 prophetic days, so frequently mentioned by Danie= l and=20 St. John, comprehends the tyrannical reign of those three great opponents = of the=20 Gospel: Popery, Mohammedism, and Infidelity. This period indeed may not=20 improperly be styled the permitted hour of the powers of darkness; = since=20 the Church is represented as being in an afflicted and depressed state dur= ing=20 the whole of its continuance, and since its expiration will be marked by a= =20 signal display of the judgments of God upon his enemies and by the commenc= ement=20 of a new and happy order of things.

Understanding the Reformation position on eschatology, as it is set for= th in=20 this work, gives us great insight into as to why the Romanists (i.e. the J= esuits=20 in particular) were so intent on planting both Preterism (Alcasar, c. 1615= ) and=20 Futurism (Ribera, c. 1585) among the Protestants. 583=20 pages.

Antichrist in Scripture: Luther and Calvin's Doctrine of= the=20 Antichrist (1992)

Few Christians know that the anti-Protestant Futurist theory originated= with=20 a Spanish Jesuit by the name of Ribera, who, in 1585, published a Commenta= ry on=20 the Revelation, in which he laboured to turn aside the Protestant applicat= ion of=20 the Apocalyptic prophecies and symbols from the church of Rome. It is also not well known that the anti-Protestant Praterite (pre= terist)=20 theory came from the pen of a Spanish Jesuit, Alcasar of Seville, who in 1= 615=20 published a work having in view the same end as Ribera, viz, to set aside = the=20 commonly accepted Reformation view that the Roman Papacy is the Antichrist= =20 (adapted from Original Covenanter and Contending Witness=20 magazine).

This books shows how and why "the Reformers denominated the papacy as=20 Antichrist." Some quotes from the= writings=20 of Calvin and Luther appear here in English for the first=20 time. Regarding the Protestant testimony set= forth=20 herein Paisley has stated,

the preaching of the Great Cloud of Witnesses of all ages in the Church= is=20 true... that the little horn is none other than the Dynasty of Rome's Pope= s and=20 that therefore THE POPE IS THE ANTICHRIST.

This view (the "continuous historical Protestant theory") stands in agr= eement=20 with Luther, Calvin, Knox, the We= stminster=20 Divines, Owen, Ames, Spurgeon, Baxter, Matthew Henry, Jonathan Edwards,=20 Cunningham, Ryle, Cotton, Brown, and virtually all of the other standard=20 Protestant interpreters of the book of Revelation.

Lee provides several pages of useful references on this topic in the va= rious=20 Protestant Confessions= of Faith. He points out how the Westminster Confession and the Preamble= to the=20 Decrees of Dordt 1618-19 both clearly denominate the Papacy as the antichrist. He conclude= s his=20 book with a useful chapter summarizing the contents (British Reformed=20 Journal, April, 1993).

The Rise and Fall of the Papacy=20 (1848)

"Originally published in 1701. The first of these discou= rses has=20 been the most celebrated. It arrested public notice, and awakened the inte= rest=20 of Europe. After laying down the principle upon which the author conceived= the=20 Apocalypse should be interpreted, he explained the pouring out of the four= th=20 vial with reference to Anti-Christian France, fixing 1794 as the date of t= he=20 expiration of the vial. When the French Revolution took place it was then= =20 remembered that it had been so predicted by a forgotten Scottish pastor. T= he=20 work was reprinted both in England and America, translated into different= =20 languages, and once more fell out of sight till the revolution of 1848 led= to a=20 fresh perusal. Referring to Italy, the author wrote: 'The Fifth vial, whic= h is=20 to be poured out upon the seat of the Beast will probably begin about 1794= and=20 expire about the year 1848.' The = downfall=20 of the Papacy, according to Fleming, is going on; the Mohammedan Antichris= t will=20 follow, and about A.D. 2000 (Jewish reckoning, about 2017 on the Julian=20 calendar=97RB), the millennial epoch will begin.= In that=20 memorable year (1848) the Pope was compelled to become a fugitive from Rom= e; and=20 it was certainly a striking coincidence" (Johnston, The Treasury of the= =20 Scottish Covenant, 371). The Millennium: Peace, Prosperity and National=20 Covenanting (1879)

This is the Reformation (especially second Reformation) view of= =20 postmillennialism as set forth and explained in terms of the national bles= sings=20 and gospel purity that will be present when the millennium=20 arrives.

Some items discussed include:

1. The visible state of unity in the church during the millennium

2. National covenanting.

3. How kings will be "nursing fathers" (Isa. 49:23) to the church durin= g this=20 blessed period of history.

4. How "all nations shall serve him" (Ps 72:11) in that day (and there = are no=20 nations in heaven -- so this must be speaking of what will take place on e= arth=20 before Christ returns, contrary to=20 amillennialism)!

In short, the millennium will = be marked=20 by visible civil and ecclesiastical obedience to Christ as King! This is exactly the opposite of the situation that we are presen= tly=20 experiencing -- for we live in the days of the great apostasy (2 Thes. 2:3= ). The=20 church (visible) is in disarray and has grievously backslidden from her pr= evious=20 Reformation attainments. No nation is covenanted with Christ (as a nation)= , but=20 instead,

"The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel tog= ether,=20 against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their ban= ds=20 asunder, and cast away their cords from us" (Ps. 2:2-3).

The nations and many churches despise Christ's royal law and He now "ve= x(es)=20 them in his sore displeasure" -- but when=20 the millennial glory arrives the river of His Spirit will fill the earth (= Ezek=20 47:1-12) and His high priestly prayer will be answered=20 (John 17:21: "That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I = in=20 thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe t= hat=20 thou hast sent me.").

This is a greatly encouraging introduction to this topic and the best s= hort=20 treatment of this subject that we offer! Excerpted from the Original=20 Covenanter and Contending Witness magazine (volumes 2:4-6).
